What are Line Drawings?
What do you see when you see a blank piece of paper? Some people see peace and quiet. Some see serenity.
What do I see? I see chaos! I see confusion! I imagine I know something about how God felt when He looked on the face of the earth in
Genesis 1:2.
“And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep.”
That’s what I see when I look at a blank piece of paper. What I see is incompleteness! I see a challenge! A blank piece of paper has purpose. It needs either words that make sense, or some other thing to give it meaning. Until words or drawings are added, all blank pieces of paper look the same and are incomplete.
That’s what Line Drawings are!
I am not sure when I started drawing these designs. I think it was when I was under heavy stress. I had a job that required me to drive long distances and be away from home for lengthy periods of time. I was working long hours to complete the building projects I was assigned. Things where not going well at church either. I could not get my mind away from work and would sit in church and think about all of the things I had to do! The preaching was not very interesting either. To focus I would doodle these designs while I tried to listen. What I think happened was that my ears were more focused on listening and my mind was taken off the work problems as I focused it on the drawings.
I filed them away, and over time, collected quite a few. As I was moving from my big house into a small apartment and was downsizing, I came across them. I find them interesting in their complexity and simplicity.
I continue to draw these designs today. They are all similar but very different. I have given them titles in no particular order or significance. The titles do represent a character trait that every Christian and maintenance tech needs to develop. Some have Bible verses associated with them to help to understand these concepts.
These line drawings can be compared to people in that they are all similar but very different. Like most maintenance techs, each is an individual. Some of the designs overlap just like the similarities that are found in people.
When we are born we are like a blank piece of paper. God starts doodling on us and with us and if we let Him work on us, we become an individual piece of art. Like people they are all about the same size and shape. I take a piece of paper and fold it in half and then I start drawing. When I am done, I turn it over and do the same on the back side. It then becomes like a marriage: Two pieces of art on the same paper! As they come together they remind me of a good local church! Many different pieces of art trying to bring glory to God by working together! Just like Line Drawings!
The only significance you can get from them is to understand the need to turn chaos into complexity and purpose. For me, they help my mind to slow down and concentrate!
